This was one of my most intensive projects yet!
It was my first oval-shaped basket, and I did minimal stitching (just to experiment with a new technique), but I did not like it at all! Haha.
It was also my first time hand-dyeing yarn, which in itself was a process, but I also experimented with using food dye and organic cotton butcher’s twine to make a food-safe-ish yarn.

Design

I started this design with a doodle. I knew I wanted to use all the colors of the rainbow when making this, so I made the butterfly blue and purple. The butterfly represents a Blue Morpho, which symbolizes healing, hope and new beginnings. The green ring around the butterfly represents the earth, specifically Spring, which symbolizes renewal. The yellow, orange and red triangles represent flames of fire, which symbolizes rebirth. And all the colors together represent the rainbow, which symbolizes love and unity.

Butterfly Banneton

I started this project on May 13, 2025 and finished it on July 20, 2025. It took about 27 hours to make and used over 1,000 feet of twine!

I’ve already started a new series and the first piece is almost done, just in time for Halloween! 🙂

Until next time!
